Case study · Kraków · 2024

Repairing defective railings and completing the development

The developer contacted Silma Tools after corrosion appeared on elements supplied by a previous contractor—before construction had even been completed.

Residential development in Kraków with railings completed by Silma Tools

Project scope

44 balconies across several buildings.

  • average of 6 linear metres of railing per balcony
  • approximately half of the elements taken over for repair
  • remaining railings manufactured from new
  • condition assessment, measurement and repair specification
  • removal, transport and reinstallation

Engineering challenge

Corrosion before project handover.

The previous contractor’s components had not been adequately protected against corrosion. They were painted without prior galvanising, and rust appeared before the development was accepted.

Some defective elements had already been installed, so the repair scope also required controlled removal.

Delivery process

From failure diagnosis to durable corrosion protection.

01

Assessment

Identification of the corrosion cause and development of a repair method.

02

Removal

Safe removal of installed elements and preparation for refurbishment.

03

Blasting and galvanising

Removal of the old coating and application of appropriate corrosion protection.

04

Coating and installation

Graphite powder coating, transport and reinstallation.

Outcome

Consistent appearance with the correct protection system.

Silma manufactured the remaining railings from carbon-steel sections with galvanised wire-mesh infill.

Both the sections and mesh were galvanised and then powder coated in graphite. The completed scope was accepted by the developer without further corrosion issues.
