A GO/NO-GO gauge through one complete manufacturing route

A one-off inspection gauge manufactured from the initial workpiece through heat treatment and precision finishing to permanent functional markings.

Actual GO/NO-GO limit gauge manufactured by Silma Tools

At a glance

Several processes. One controlled component.

  • one-off gauge manufactured to customer documentation
  • CNC turning and complementary machining
  • heat treatment to 58–60 HRC
  • precision grinding, wire EDM and permanent marking

The challenge

Two inspection functions had to be combined in one gauge.

Silma was tasked with producing a single plug gauge for rapid verification of two dimensional ranges. The component required a consistent sequence of machining, heat treatment and precision finishing operations.

The manufacturing route was coordinated within one facility, from preparation of the workpiece to marking the completed inspection gauge.

Technical approach

A controlled sequence from machining to inspection surfaces.

01

CNC machining

Turning, knurling, grooves and the remaining features were produced in preparation for subsequent operations.

02

Heat treatment

The component was hardened to 58–60 HRC.

03

Precision finishing

The inspection surfaces were ground to the dimensions defined in the customer documentation.

04

Wire EDM and marking

Selected features were produced by wire EDM and the inspection functions were permanently marked.

Outcome

A finished gauge from one coordinated manufacturing route.

Combining CNC machining, heat treatment, grinding and wire EDM avoided splitting responsibility between unrelated suppliers.
